Over the years we’ve found that the majority of homeowners choose asphalt shingles for their homes. Today there are more makes and styles of asphalt shingles than ever. There are many designer shingles that give a beautiful and bold look such as the architectural laminated shingles, which have been growing in popularity for several years.

The traditional three-tab asphalt shingles are still available through some manufacturers however, they are less in demand and may not be available in a few years. One of the most significant changes we have seen is the introduction of fiberglass based shingles as a replacement to the organic felt base.

The main benefits of fiberglass based shingles as compared to the old organic felt based shingles are:

Fiberglass shingles have a class A fire rating, organic shingles only class B at best.
Fiberglass shingles use approximately 40% less asphalt than organic felt therefore lighter and less harmful to the environment.
Although it is important to pay attention to your roof and look for telltale signs it needs to be replaced, fiberglass shingles will lay flatter longer into their life expectancy and not curl or claw like the organic felt base shingles.
